Will The World End In 2012? - book review

_240_360_book

This book summarizes and briefly explains ten different scenarios surrounding the 2012 “end of time” predictions... from the Mayan calendar predictions to others based in scientific discovery (some more loosely based on science than others) to religious predictions.  Dr. Hundley identifies the major strengths and weaknesses of each prediction – but in the end, presents a challenge to all Christians.  After presenting the plan of salvation, he challenges Christians to use the 2012 discussions as a springboard for intentional spiritual conversations with those around them.  This is a timely reminder of Christ’s calling regardless of the reader’s interest in the 2012 fanaticism.

This book caught my eye because of the recent movie and the general discussion on the matter of 2012 predictions.  It should not be considered a textbook or a research manual because not enough detail is given to explain the intricacies of each theory.  However the size of this book makes it an easy read for someone who is mildly interested in the 2012 discussion, or looking for a place to start doing research on the matter.  A detailed list of notes and outside sources is included for the reader who chooses to dive deeper into studying any of the scenarios described.  A list of follow-up questions at the back of the book provides an opportunity for a reading group or a church group to continue discussing the different scenarios and their reactions to them.

My only strong suggestion/critique of the book relates to the “intros” to each chapter which feature a hypothetical depiction of what it would look like if that scenario came true.  These “intros” are obviously fiction but felt very out of place to me.  They threw in an unrealistic and sci-fi feeling …the type of thing you expect to be presented in a comic book format rather than a book that attempts to seriously address the different scenarios.
